When to use a Large Group Intervention?

When do you use a Large Group Intervention and when is a meeting with a small group more appropriate? This depends on the purpose and the circumstances. According to Bryan Smith (please click on figure to see his model) the following are important criteria:

  • The desired/possible level of ownership and commitment
  • The clarity of the question, the desired outcome and the route to follow
  • Complexity of the issue
  • Degree of uncertainty of the circumstances
  • Is the outcome pre-defined or not?
  • Plurality of stakeholders/agendas

In fact these criteria also hold true for Large Scale Interventions, because they comprise at least one Large Group Intervention.
